| [M]Poll on Welcomer [message #289109] |
So, 18 Juni 2006 18:25 |
|
As requested, I am attempting to cause a poll to happen on afp as to how
people feel about the Welcomer, so:
Do you think it's perfect as it is?
If not, how would you like it changed?
Does this include dropping it altogether?
Does Esmi deserve a round of applause for working so hard on it all this
time, notwithstanding any of the above?
NOTE: This poll is mandatory. All afpers including lurkers (particularly
lurkers!) WILL respond [1].
[1] This is a joke. The rest of it isn't.

Perfection is, as I'm sure you're aware, unattainable. The question
should be:
Do you think it's good enough at serving its stated purpose as it is?
Yes.
> If not, how would you like it changed?
While I think it's good enough, the recently suggested amendments posted
by esmi would make it better.

No.

I doubt it - but nothing is perfect in the world.
> If not, how would you like it changed?
I may have a look at it and comment. But it didn't frighten me off whe I
read it. Most of it is basic Netiquette, which I leared in my fiorst 3
months on Usenet (which, fortunately, were just before Dejanews started
archiving everything. I think my worst faux pas have been lost).
> Does this include dropping it altogether?
Firmly, no. It is an excellent idea. Maybe with a little tweaking it
could be better, but I approv of the principle strongly.

Definitely. Lspace, in all its aspects, is a valuable community sxervice
and I, for one, am grateful for it. I know that people do it for no
reward, and I than them.

Agreed with Orjan on all counts. It's fine as is, but the suggested amended
version is even better. Esmi is, of course, deserving of much credit and

It should be sent to the clue fairies, not the newbies, to remind the clue
fairies that a newbie has joined that they need to treat nicely, and to
remind them that change will happen over time no matter what.

You don't have a valid mail address -> you don't get one.
And the filtering is by "known" addresses against your stated one in the
header. Probably someone had used invalid [at] invalid.invalid before you did.
BTW: The text of the welcomer was printed in another thread. Perhaps the
revised one should be shown too.

But I /do/ have a valid mail address, and it's evident from my sig block
what that mail address is. All the clue fairies need to do is learn how to
read for comprehension. If they can't do that, they have no business
sending anyone email.

Richard,
Before you start instructing others to learn how to read for
comprehension, might I suggest /you/ look at
<e6v6ui$517$1 [at] mud.stack.nl>[1]?
It was posted a couple of days before your post, and should explain
exactly why your particular obfuscation doesn't get picked up by
the *script* that examines *headers* for deliverable addresses.
What the Clue Fairies do is to go through the output of the script,
look for valid addresses in the list, and approve sending of the
mail to unfamiliar-looking people.
best wishes,
Gideon.

Agreed. I assumed even before I read that post that it as primarily an
automated script doing the initial checking. That being the case explains
why it wasn't able to demunge my From: address which is decidedly
non-standard ;) I've only recently put a proper 'From:' in there.

It was good enough for me.
(Except for one point: It pointed me at to many FAQs.
However, that's the problem with having so many FAQs,
not a problem with the Welcomer.)

No. Definitely.

I certainly wouldn't want to upset the universe

I agree, you've just posted your first post to AFP then your advised to
subscribe to another newsgroup and read loads of FAQ's. I also agree
that's it's more or a problem with having too many FAQ's than the
welcome message.

I do appreciate the above but..
....I am not the only one who has put some effort into running the
Welcomer. elfin, Karen, Leo and Meg Thornton have all been involved
either continiously or at some point in the past. Secondly, Hamster, who
created the scripts involved, runs the 'kat from his own server in his
own time and has done so for over 6 years.
Mainly, however, I just find that it makes me feel profoundly
uncomfortable. So, with the greatest of respect, thank you for the offer
of applause but, if you don't mind, I'd rather not.

http://www.lspace.org/fandom/afp/welcome.html
for the original
The suggested change is for the first paragraph and currently reads:
"Hello, and welcome to Alt.fan.pratchett,
If you're not new to Usenet and/or have lurked on AFP for a while, then
this document may not be something that you need to read. This document
is designed to help new posters to the group get up to speed quickly and
allow them to find useful information relating to the group."
If this text is agreed by the majority, I will then need to contact
Hamster and ask him to make the text changes. Once the amended text is
in place, I will amend the page on Lspace accordingly so that the page
reflects what is currently being sent out.

As should be transparently obvious (given my previous comments), I'm
fine with either version; as long as it remains friendly without
being too huggy-feely, it's fine by me.
If people feel that the new version reflects the current AFP view,
then let it be the latest revision to the text.
cheers,
Gideon.

As perfect as anything can be in an imperfect world.

Its a good idea... and in the mists of time I *do* vaguely remember
feeling particularly welcomed... although I was also somewhat Newbieish
at the time and I remember thinking "OMG, how did they get my email
address? how did they know I'm new?? am I being stalked?!?" So, I
wouldn't scrap it.
If I did have a criticism I would say that it appears to be somewhat
long... but I can't point to anything I would snip.

A round? Heck, she deserves a square. At least.

It strikes me that *true* lurkers (as opposed to part time lurkers like
myself) will never have recieved the Welcome... but will recieve it as
soon as they respond to this.

Oh... was it? Thanks for letting us know ;)
